02 Second Order/Presence Conditions/Produced Distinctions/Surface

Surface

Surface names the presenting face of a condition. Where Visible carries presented readability and Form names readable arrangement, Surface names the face through which that presentation is met, followed, trusted, patched, or mistaken as holding.

Surface does not mean shallow, false, decorative, or merely external. The surface presents. What matters is whether the presentation remains answerable to what carries it.

Trace

Read

Surface becomes recognisable where a condition presents a readable face - where what is available to read can be encountered before its carrying is fully traced.

Structural Role

A surface can present truthfully where presentation remains carried by Bearing. It can present partially where only some carrying is available. It can present deceptively where continuation remains visible after bearing has failed, or where hidden carrying blocks retrace.

In a Fabric, surface may be the visible face of real woven continuity. In a surface patch, surface may continue after the required carrying condition remains unrestored.
